Samsung unveils new solid-state EV batteries with 600-mile charge in 9 minutes, 20-year lifespan

Preparation for dry electrode production: The company is also developing affordable LFP, cobalt-free batteries, and dry electrode production to reduce costs. Samsung’s oxide solid state battery, Samsung’s oxide solid-state battery technology boasts an impressive energy density of 500 Wh/kg, nearly double the 270 Wh/kg density of mainstream EV batteries.

A new practical and Latest Technology

Samsung has unleashed a game-changing innovation in electric vehicle (EV) battery technology. Introducing its latest solid-state batteries, the tech giant has introduced a power source that promises to rewrite the rules of EV performance and practicality.

New production line is now ready

At the SNE Battery Day 2024 expo in Seoul, South Korea, Samsung revealed that its pilot solid-state EV battery production line is now fully operational. “We built a pilot line last year to mass produce all-solid-state batteries by 2027,” Samsung SDI said.

Start of #invention and its positive feedback

Initial batches of batteries have already been delivered to EV manufacturers for evaluation. “We provided samples to customers from the end of last year to the beginning of this year and we are getting positive feedback,” Samsung SDI said.

Potential advantages of solid state batteries

These solid-state batteries hold the promise of revolutionizing the electric vehicle (EV) industry, as they are expected to be smaller, lighter and safer than the lithium-ion batteries used in most EVs. They have the potential to power electric vehicles with a range of 600 miles, charge in just 9 minutes and have a lifespan of 20 years.

Impressive energy density

Samsung’s oxide solid-state battery technology boasts an impressive energy density of 500 Wh/kg, nearly double the 270 Wh/kg density of mainstream EV batteries. This increased density could potentially double the driving range of current electric vehicles.

Initial target market and affordable alternatives

However, due to their high production costs, the initial application of these batteries will be limited to the “super premium” EV segment, which typically offers a driving range of around 600 miles per charge. In addition, Samsung will introduce high-nickel NCS products for the premium segment. Alongside its work on solid-state batteries, Samsung is also developing more affordable lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and cobalt-free batteries, as well as a dry electrode production method to reduce costs. “We will not only match prices in the popular and entry-level segments, but also mass-produce products that can be fast-charged in 9 minutes by 2026,” Samsung SDI highlighted.

Competitive landscape, charging infrastructure

While Samsung’s solid-state battery advances are important, the company must navigate a competitive landscape dominated by Chinese manufacturers. The limited availability of high-speed charging infrastructure remains a notable challenge, as some Chinese battery manufacturers already offer 5C or 6C charging speeds, equivalent to 480kW and even 600kW charging stations.

Broader market trend: “Million Mile” batteries

However, the visible approach of all battery manufacturers to offer longer battery life, often referred to as “million mile” batteries, is a notable trend. Samsung’s vision of “extending battery life by 20 years” is in line with this broader market trend.
